Glasses as an agent interface

Seeded Started. Parts of it exist, parts are still being read and costed.

Smart glasses let an agent see what the wearer sees and answer by voice. An open software stack for that now exists.

The survey covers the devices on sale and how to build apps for them.

Drawn from Jo's survey, Part VIII.

MentraOS, the open answer

MentraOS, formerly AugmentOS, is an MIT-licensed smart glasses operating system with every component public: clients, cloud, SDKs and example apps. It is built by Mentra Labs.

Apps run on the phone inside the Mentra runtime, and the glasses only display and capture. Several apps share one connection to the glasses, so captions, notes, notifications and AI tools run side by side, the glasses stay light, and one app works with any supported pair.

  • Established

Supported devices and prices as gathered 11 August 2026: Mentra Live $249 (camera, no display), Mentra Mach1 $349 (display), Vuzix Z100 $499 (display, no camera), Even Realities G1 $599 (display, no camera).

  • Established

The SDK exposes display control, microphone access and camera commands through one API.

Before buying anything in Europe

The survey has a section titled "the EU availability problem, read this before buying anything Meta". Which Meta devices can be bought in Europe has changed several times, for structural reasons as well as scheduling ones. This page makes no claim about current availability. Check before ordering.

What is not known here

The open items for this project. Work on it starts here.

  • No pair has been bought and no app has been written here yet.
  • Whether a local model on a phone is fast enough to be the thing behind the glasses is the open question this area exists to answer.
  • Current EU availability of every device listed above is unverified.
