Leaving Big Tech, one service at a time

In the making

Keeping your files, your conversations and your models on machines you control.

In practice that is three things: a cloud of your own for files, calendar and chat, a model that runs locally, and open-source software you can inspect and move. The guide takes them one service at a time.

The members’ cloud of this workshop is built this way.

A cheap local AI setup

Guide

A local AI setup on a small budget

In the making

Running a language model on hardware you already own or can buy second-hand. The limit is video memory, and quantisation shrinks a model until it fits.

In August 2026 this was measured on the workshop’s own card, which has 4 GB of video memory. A model of one billion parameters ran beside image generation. A model of four billion parameters, quantised to 4 bits, fitted once the card was otherwise free.

The research pages under Projects show how they are checked: each claim keeps the grade its source earned, and what is unknown is listed at the end.
